Overview of Level 1 - Level 4

An empowerment-based self-defense class teaches skills in awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques. These tools can help a person prevent, resist, escape, survive and heal from assault, abuse or harassment.​​

Getting Started

An Empowerment-based Self-Defense (ESD) course provides training not only physical techniques like blocking and strikes but also psychological awareness and verbal skills. Practicing a wide range of skills builds personal confidence and competence, which transfer into daily life.  Find a class near you or take an online course.

All Gender Level 1 Empowerment Self-Defense Instructor Training

A week-long intensive program for adults, with preference given to co-ed teaching pairs who will co-teach in their communities. This training prepares Instructors to teach ESD violence prevention programs for co-ed children's group's ages 5-7 years and 8-10 years.

Women's Level 1 Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) Instructor Training

A unique week-long intensive program for female-identified self-defense instructors, both aspiring and experienced, who want to develop their skills to deliver ESD training in their communities. Graduates of the training are qualified to provide a 10-hour ESD course to adults, as well as shorter formats.

Scholarships Are Available

ESD Global strives to make trainings accessible and works with applicants to provide  financial assistance by supporting individuals to fundraise, by providing  scholarships. Like all participants, persons who accept a full scholarship are expected to provide up to 30 hours of volunteer ESD training to their communities and actively participate in the 2-year mentorship program.

The ESD Global Curriculum is based in 7 educational principles: 

  1. Options to identify, interrupt, respond to and heal from violence through games, activities, and discussions. 

  2. Ensure that self-defense tools are evidence and researched based. 

  3. Empower individuals rather than using fear as a motivation. 

  4. Help individuals understand that they have permission to defend themselves if they choose to.

Section

ESD is an evidenced-based primary violence prevention system. It teaches individuals how to interrupt violence by listening to their intuition, assessing their options, asserting boundaries, using de-escalation strategies, and provides tools for a range of mental, verbal and physical responses.

Empowerment Self-Defense is a holistic approach to personal safety which teaches tools to combat the whole spectrum of violence, from verbal harassment to physical violence.
